Braces or retainers are used to correct and straighten misaligned or crooked teeth.
They can also help with other bite-related or ‘malocclusion’ problems.
There are different types of malocclusion such as Underbite, Overbite, Cross bite, Open bite, and Overjet (or “buck teeth”).
If misaligned teeth are not corrected, this could lead to several problems, i.e, Tooth decay and gum disease, Wear and Tear, Chewing and digestive problems, Gum injury, Fractured teeth, and Snoring and breathing problems.
Retainers or braces can help to address these problems. The more severe the problems the more likely you are to need traditional metal braces. Historically these have tended to be unsightly and unhygienic.
However, some braces (depending on the treatment you require) can be placed behind the teeth. This does not overcome all the hygiene problems though, which is why clear retainers are so popular.
Clear or ‘invisible’ retainers can be removed enabling you to brush your teeth and maintain excellent oral hygiene. They are less obtrusive and can even be removed if it’s a seriously important occasion e.g. a first date!
Here is a video of Taylor Swift having her retainers replaced – it’s messy but painless (and quite amusing)
One of the best-known brands of clear or invisible retainer is ‘Invisalign’. It is discussed in more detail on the home page.
